I may have fallen to the epidemic, but I’m a recusant – I won’t become what they have become. At first I stayed in shadows and ate sushi, but the urges are stronger now. Restaurants are dangerous. I’ve decided to hole up here and order my meat delivered. I hope the carrier leaves it on the porch. I don’t want to risk him. I should take the food and leave. Already my fingers twitch. My neck is most certainly not twitching. I am in control. I will relax, in this chair, not twitching until…
The doorbell rings. I smell it. Meat.

What You Remember
By Wakefield Mahon
“You’re being difficult.” Robert sighed, running his fingers through what remained of his gray hair.
“The word you are looking for is recusant.” Amanda half-smiled. “Funny the things you remember. Anyway you’re not my father. Don’t tell me what to do!”
“Listen my grandchildren are coming over and you frighten them. Please go.”
She smoothed out her blood stained prom dress “I’m not leaving until my date gets here.”
Robert wiped a tear from his eye. “I did. It took me years to get over the accident but I’ve moved on and it’s time for you to do the same.

Samantha woke up to a room she’d never been in before. Swinging her legs over the side of the bed, the room swam before her eyes. Catching sight of herself in the reflection of the bar covered windows, she glanced down at herself for the first time.
A gauzy, vintage dress swirled around her ankles.
A memory flooded over her. She’d fought him. Scratching his face and arms—recusant until she’d blacked out. A prickle on her arm reminded her of the needle.
“Damn you, Garrett. Let me out of here,” she screamed as she pounded on the oak door.

RECUSANT
The door shut behind him, he faced the disheveled woman reclined with her feet on the bed.
“Your quarrel is with me,” he clasped his crucifix, “not with God. Twenty years recusant is past time to return to the fold.”
Her wicked smile stirred his blood, “But Father, I’ve found something so much better. I just have to sit here, never come out, and everyone who ever betrayed me suffers.”
“I’ve made my peace with God. You should as well.”
“Any god, who would forgive you, is no God of mine.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“You think I didn’t?”

The blood, I demand that it not get on my pretty dress but it is recusant and goes wherever it pleases. With every slash, more flows and spurts from him. This change in me is not expected, the pleasure I feel drives me forward. The smell of the blood fills me; I can no longer keep from tasting it. I clasp my mouth around a wound I sliced into his neck and drink the warmth that pours into me. He is but a shell now and I fall back into the chaise admiring myself in the mirror at the door.

Staggering, Damien tightly held the bottle in his hand. Holding several napkins, each with a phone number, Damien belched, “Another successful zombie pub crawl.”
Seeing the girl passed out on the armchair he dropped his beer. Unbuttoning his pants he slurred, “It’s about to get even more successful.”
Just as he started to lift her dress, her eyes opened. Damien froze.
“Don’t fret. I’m not another recusant.” She traced Damien’s jawline with a bloody finger.
Damien watched her mouth, surprised at the jagged pearls, stained crimson behind her soft lips. She leaned closer, whispering.
“Think of me more as… Bait.”

All crying did was make my make-up run; it didn’t change anything. I had no one to blame but myself. If I hadn’t been so recusant it could have turned out differently, but instead I ended up with blood all over my favourite dress. Was it worth it? I looked round the eloquent room; it was as dramatic as my actions – I loved it! Yes it was worth it. But what was I going to do about the mess? I smiled; I had acres of land now to lose the bodies on and no one ever came here. Perfect.

“Did anyone ever tell you you’re recusant Patti?”
“Did anyone tell you that you’re a stick in the mud?”
“That was Lucy’s fault.”
“Well what are you waiting for? You said you loved me Charlie and would do anything I asked.”
“I’m not doing this.”
“But you promised Charlie.”
“I didn’t promise to be embarrassed.”
“You said you do this. You’ll disappoint the children.”
“Okay I’ll do it for the children then. What are you dressed as anyway Patti?”
“I’m a pumpkin girl. Rah, rah and all that.”
“Good grief, what is my costume?”
“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

Beyond Cleansing
So silently did Gregor enter the room, Analise was unaware of him until he spoke. “You are fortunate I still have friends in the Gendarmerie. The girl’s body will be…disposed of and there will be no investigation. Dammit, Analise, your recusant behavior simply can no longer be tolerated. We are a Family of rules. You tore a girl’s throat out for throwing juice on you?!? Inexcusable!”
Sprawled indolently on the chaise, she looked up at him with a decidedly mischievous grin. “But Uncle, I had to! Blood stains I know all too well how to remove…but fruit punch? Impossible.”

“So we’re being recusant?”
Lilly grins. She leans back and throws an arm behind her head. “You and your vocabulary.”
Jack’s jaw works. “You know what it means, don’t you, pet?”
Lilly nods. Spreads her legs. Lifts one ankle and slides it out along the coffee table. “I do, Sir.”
He stalks toward her. Lilly can feel her pulse race. Jack knows she’d never refuse to comply, to deny him her submission, but sometimes she loves the chase.
And good God does he look ready to chase her tonight.
Jack steps between her legs. Shoves them apart. Smirks. “Prove it.”

Hoo Doo
By Lisa McCourt Hollar
“Raul, what have you done?”
“I went to the witch father. I had too, Selena is too beautiful to just allow to waste away beneath the earth.”
Attempting to control his temper, Sebastian paced the room, wanting to shake his recusant son. That wouldn’t undo the thing he had done. It was that damn witch’s fault. She was the one that tricked his son into drinking the love potion, binding his heart to Selena’s forever.
Across the room, Selena, still in the prom dress she had drowned in, sighed, throwing a rotting leg up on the edge of the bed.
