I am happy to have this week’s Tuesdaytales Judgemasters take over:
A writer, slowly coming into focus and gaining clarity of mind….
Netherlands (but from London)
JUDGE’S COMMENTS: “This was extremely difficult to judge, with over 31 entries. I really wanted to have two winners and around six honourable mentions! There were just so many well written pieces. I loved the different takes on the word Concoct and the photo prompt, from Concocting love potions, break-up potions, weather potions; Concocting plans to covering up murders by female Vampires and serial killers; to Virtual reality and even psychological breakdown. It was a real lesson for me in what makes a good flash fiction piece; how to put across a complete coherent tale in so few words.”
A 40something wife, mother, homeschooler, aspiring novelist, and former trombonist with housekeeping issues.
Give me my computer, hot chocolate, and music. I’m ready to roll!
“This piece had it all for me; perfect writing flow; great use of the prompt word Concoct as a potion to create the perfect environment, to set a scene; adding in the photo prompt in an effortless way, and then the punch line at the end, which was comical and make me laugh out loud. She encapsulated the hope and belief the MC had in executing her plans – the ultimate optimist against unlikely odds. And she did all this in well under 100 words.”
It had all seemed such a simple plan.
Concoct a little bad weather, stand on Love Street near his office in that smashing little black dress and heels. (The red purse had been a brilliant last minute addition to the outfit.) Braston would see her on his way home and offer a ride. Love and marriage couldn’t help but follow.
Simple, really. How could it go wrong?
Nightshade, she’d used to much of it in the potion and whipped up a category 2 hurricane, killing her chances at love.
First goes to Afsaneh K @afsaneh_dereams I loved this piece, and if I could have had a joint win, this would be it. I found this piece so emotive; capturing the feelings these lovers still had after such a long time aprart with the line: ‘I couldn’t wait, they both thought’. I also liked the use of the prompt word too – ‘concoction of memories’, which told the reader simply that the characters had a lot of past memories which bound them.
Second goes to Cara Michaels @caramichaels The piece flowed perfectly for me and left me with a smile. She put across the image in the photo well, and easily; the sensation of the warm ground underfoot in the rain, and the elated feelings you’re left with after a brilliant first date. I really enjoyed this piece.
Third goes to Kat @KatDVS I love this sort of piece, using questions to tell the story, to move it forward. It gives you insight into the MC, into how they think and telling the story through internal dialogue. In this instance how she knows she is making a mistake, but feels powerless to change it. It was nicely done.
I have added a Fourth because I just had to! Rakel Sampson @sampsonwriter I liked this piece, it was very evocative – did he kill her? Or even – did he eat her? The last line was very Hannibal Lecter. Also I liked the use of the colour Red from the photo prompt, it led in well.
Can I give a special mention to Jonathon Volkmeer @JonathonVolkmeer who entered a poem? It was really lovely too, very emotive and led the reader into experiencing the emotions. I enjoyed it very much.Everyone spread the word of the HMS:@afsaneh_dreams , @caramichaels , @KatDVS , @sampsonwriter and the winner @sammyjwebb , and @PurpleQueenNL for the awesome judgemastery!
