    Third Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign

     Second CHALLENGE

This Campaign will run from August 22nd to October 31st. hosted by @RachaelHarrie

This week’s challenge is to write a 200 word story

    Imago -Velvet Touch:

“The message will get to her. Be safe.” Mrs. Aletta waves then closes the door behind her thinking about the lacuna in the room.

Her mother’s head peeks around the corner of the staircase, “He’s cute.”

    “He is.”

“He seems sorry for something.” She presses with a small smirk.

“He is.” A miasmatic frown crosses Marie’s face.

“Want to talk about it?” Mrs. Aletta points to the kitchen, “I can get the oven mitts and a pillow.”

    Marie smiles weakly, “Okay.”

Marie places her head delicately on the pillows as her mother lifts her hair to oscitate out over top. These mitts were specially made for her out of silk velvet so as it runs across her cheek, courses over her scalp and down her hair. It is the closest thing to human skin she can touch.

It’s soothing having the velvet rub her head in soft even strokes wiping her worries away. Seems funny that her relinquishing of worry is only possible with the synchronicity of her mother not feeling too emotional and luckily today is just a calm day where her mother’s only concern is in easing her only child’s problems. Marie can feel it; just the love.

200 words exactly (not including title)

This is lovely and a little sad at the same time. Love the miasmatic frown–nice image.

It’s so refreshing to see your entries. Rich dialogue and a wealth of narrative in perfect, well, synchronicity! Love how heartwarming your ending turned out.

    Great job, Glitter! 🙂

(Dumb question: Is that your actual name?

    • glitterlady 4:25 am on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

My name is Stevie- in actuality but you can call me Glitter 🙂

  • Sonia Lal 12:41 am on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

It’s both sad and pretty at the same time. Which seems odd, but true!

  • Jen 1:16 am on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

I’m with Sonia – it’s sad and pretty at the same time.
    Mine is #3.

  • bridgetstraub 3:41 am on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

I didn’t find it sad, just comforting. Mine is #29

  • Cheryl Sonnier 4:51 am on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

Very soothing. I liked the way she felt at the end.

  • Joanna 2:58 pm on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

A narrative as soft as velvet. Well done, Stevie!

so sad, but beautiful. Just as the mittens, this piece was silky soft.

  • Nadja Notariani 5:32 pm on September 23, 2011 | # | Reply

It was nice to see the closeness between mother and daughter. I was wondering about the ‘closest thing to skin she could touch’ comment, though. Autism, maybe?
    Anyway, I’d love to know…. ~ Nadja

Oh wow! That’s so sad and very touching at the same time! It’s almost like she’s experiencing unrequited love twice over until the end.

  • Lady Gwen 12:26 am on September 24, 2011 | # | Reply

Lots of unanswered questions here – way to leave of hanging! Very nice job! I’m #34.

@Angie Cothran getting the 4 words in there was tough, glad you liked how I did it. Thax for stopping by!
@Sonia Lal & @ Jen It is a sad story but its just an excerpt from my WIP and there is a loop hole to her condition.
@bridgetstraub , @Cheryl Sonnier @Joanna @Lady Jai Thank you for reading my peice, It has a kind of traquility in it and I am glad that came across for you all.
@Nadja Notariani , the part where its the closest thing to skin she can touch is because she can’t actually touch anyone, her condition in my story is that anyone who touches her transfers their inner pain to her (so basically she absorbs other peoples pain through touch)
@Fesewell yup she pretty much feels love for so many people but can’t express her love or have love expressed to her by physical touch, velvet gloves is the closest thing she gets.
@LadyGwen A short story isn’t complete without it leaving you thinking but in a good way, I hope. Thax for stopping by!

    …miasmatic frown….

Cool! And an absolutely perfect title, IMHO.

Thumbs up on the Linky for ya.

This has a calming flow to it. I like how you used the words-they didn’t feel sharp against the rest of the piece. Good luck.

  • Steph Schmidt 9:07 pm on September 24, 2011 | # | Reply

I’m curious now about why she couldn’t touch human skin. Very interesting.

  • Rebecca Emin 7:34 pm on September 25, 2011 | # | Reply

This flash raises a lot of questions. I like that. I would love to know more about these characters.

  • Christine Rains 1:15 am on September 26, 2011 | # | Reply

This was well written and flowed so well. Such a sweet story too. Good job!

  • Zan Marie 1:32 pm on September 26, 2011 | # | Reply

Now I want to know *why* she can’t be touched. Good story.

  • Raelyn Barclay 10:03 pm on September 28, 2011 | # | Reply

Great job with the challenge. You’ve left me completely wondering why she can’t be touched!

  • Kurt 12:31 am on September 29, 2011 | # | Reply

It took me two reads to put it all together, but I was happy to read it again. Very nice atmosphere.

Such a good job. I have so many whys??

  • Claire Hennessy 2:10 pm on September 30, 2011 | # | Reply

Lovely story, but I’m glad I read some comments as I didn’t quite understand everything (which is probably the point, as I see it is part of your WIP), intriguing and I loved miasmatic frown.

A magical story fit to be pulled from the magician’s black velvet top hat.

Grand job you did, writing words dripping with paint, paint from the loveliest word pictures.
