    AMPED UP

If youaretheowner of this photo please let me know so I can credit.

Crisp air enters my lungs, the sign of falls descent on the unsuspecting people of Guarana. It only just seemed to arrive, summer, but with the factories on overdrive it’s no wonder our seasons are crazy like caffeinated yerba mate. That’s what they say they are making there, energy supplements. An understatement to be sure, the compounds they are creating are like magic in a drink monstering turbo humans with strength and speed at least before the strange side-effects kick in.

“Are we clear?” Amp asks holding a scythe at ready, the morning dew gathering around the rusted handle.

“Just cherry if we make it around the horde to the mountain.” I sigh looking at the drones tearing at each other’s flesh between us and tonight’s safe haven.

Hit me with the ginseng. We’ll go all psycho on their asses!” His smile twists with excitement.

“We only have a few roots left…”

“Roots won’t do any good if we’re dead.” Sarah kneels next to me looking over the rocks as we watch one of the monsters adjusts its decaying face our direction.

“We don’t have much time before we have to plow through. The rotting flesh on a stick is losing its odor to distract.” Amp detaches the hunk dangling from his weapon, “Need more fresh repellant and it’s waiting down there.”

“Zombies… pain in my…” Breaking the root into pieces I hand it to them reluctantly wishing there was a way to just outskirt the mob.

Amp places the root between his lip and teeth like tobacco and then charges down curved blade up and swinging. The scythe chops off the curious one up front and Amp’s neck twitches to the side, “WHOO! Intense!” He screams feeling the sensations of the ginseng course through his veins.

Sarah and I keep the root close ready for the worst if necessary for now we follow our berserker into the sea of death hoping to be led to safety.

In a world where Energy drinks are the cause of Zombie INFECTIOn. Dun Dun DUN!

Not surprised a zombie apocalypse story came out of an energy drink… Those things never treat me well.
I guess I’ll give the Tuesday Tales Challenge a shot… Though I gotta say I am more than a little apprehensive about having to work with an image and a word every week with no fore-knowledge or time for research.

@david , It’s 100 words just have fun with it no need to go all scholarly on me #Tuesdaytales will be super fun and the picture is just there for inspiration in the peice, doesn’t mean it has to be the focus… just slightly referenced at the least.

I just spent the evening with someone who once worked in the food industry and after what she said I actually believe your flashfiction is one of those sci fi stories that comes true!!

@margaret Energy drinks the leading cause of zombies… I can see that happening. Is your friend one of the vending machine loaders that is distributing energy drinks across the world? lol
