“I feel…” I took one strong whiff of a mesmerizing concoction that reminded me of a pine tree right after a crisp rainfall. It had my mind reeling and my heart thumping against the inside of my ribcage.
Like a beacon I followed the toxic fumes down the banister and around the corner.
“Did you sleep well Bird?” Gabriel’s voice was like a low vibrating cello string pulling me deeper into a nonsensical consciousness.
“I feel…”
“I’ve been waiting for you.” He smirked.
A burning numbness coursed slowly through my veins.
It was too late.
I was under his spell.

Notes from the judge: @theglitterlady: This was an exceptionally difficult but eventually inescapable decision for me. What makes this story a dark horse winner, for me, is the subtle sensory engagement of it. In a mere 100 words, the reader is provided sights, sounds, touches, scents and perhaps even the taste of the noxious fumes. It sneaks up on you and almost evaded me in its quiet but masterful delivery. I extend a hearty huzzah and a bow to the skill of The Glittery One.

“Can you remember the last time?” I asked Joseph.
I sat on the dilapidated coaster tracks not expecting an answer but waiting for one none-the-less.
“What answer do you seek?” His voice was more faint than usual.
“I’m going to lose him, like all the others, he’s going to leave.” I could feel my chest tighten and my stomach turn from the anxiety.
“What has he done to lead to that conclusion?” Joseph’s voice was soft and full of warmth trying to soothe my worries.
“Nothing.” I laughed, heartbroken, the tears overflowing, “I just don’t want history to repeat itself.”

I didn’t know what would happen if an Angel fell in love. Not just the encompassing love for all humans but a more selfish love for only one. I could feel his touch sending horripilation across my ethereal skin.
“I can still feel you.”
His lips moved forming the words, “I will find you.”
We were connected now whether Heaven approved or not.
Sending me away from Earth would not keep us apart for long.
“Cable…” His name rolled longingly from my tongue. I reached to touch his translucent face before he faded. Having wings was not worth this sacrifice.

The translucent moonlight reflected off the raindrops cascading down my window. A part of me wanted to run out and hold my hands out wide letting the water soak me to the bone. Anything would feel less chilling than sitting here waiting for someone that may never show.
“What’re you thinking?” I told myself.
All those years of researching and I found this place abandoned and unaccounted for by the government. He should be here if the legends were true.
On a static day five ravens would play for the return of the Count Decluse.
A caw sounds outside.
