Juan Pablo Hurtado

Victory to Juan Pablo Hurtado (@righteousgeek) for painting a very convincing image and then shattering it with the darker story hidden behind. Bonus points seal the deal for him for a cleverly hidden double entendre using French. I bought into the aerial fire fight completely, and the arrival of the panzers which shatters the illusion reminds us that such boyish flights of fancy (ahem) are based on terrible realities. All that in 100 words? Bravo, Juan! Well done!!

TUESDAY TALE:

The Canard Rouillé soars through the skies, its dragon of a cannon ripping smoky holes in wing, hull and tail.

Ratatata-Boom!

Casualties mount.

Its engine purrs contentedly; no bird up in these clear blue stretches can match its brio and celerity.

Twin spurts from an unseen assailant threaten its underbelly, but miss.

It performs a barrel roll, throttles down and comes up behind the would-be attacker, ready to…

 Screams pierce the sunny morning, followed by the rumble of treads on gravel and drumfire.

The illusion shatters. The boy forgets the Rusty Duck and runs inside.

 The Panzerwaffe arrives.

Jonathon Volkmer, @JonathonVolkmer: I loved the Snow White vibe this story had. Like a true Grimm tale, I sense there was terror at the heart of this story. I kept coming back to it time and time again. Really great writing!

@JenD_Author – So sad… I visualized this piece and felt her pain. Very thought-provoking and emotional use of 100 words!

TUESDAY TALE:

I’m disillusioned.

My depressive funk was supposed to be dark and mysterious. I’d drink to excess and write chilling insights into a troubled mind. The next day I’d be euphoric, dancing on a sparkling beach like a woman possessed.

The truth was far less glamorous, far more – depressing. On the good days, I can get out of bed. I can calm my thoughts enough to write a few words down. Sometimes they are even good.

The truth is this: depression hurts in every way imaginable. And I’m only just learning how to find my way out of the darkness.

Sign me up!  I imagined a world that was completely different from my own, isn’t that what good writing is all about? The space age needs to get going because I’m not getting any younger!

“I don’t get what all the brouhaha is about,” the elderly lady yelled to her Granddaughter. “You would think these people’d never been to a live show before!”
“Gram,” the lovely lady replied, “it is a pretty big deal! I mean, how many other eighty year old women spend their evenings suspended above the ground in a giant orb?”
“What woman wouldn’t want to get her kicks in an enclosed space with this handsome acrobat? It sure keeps my blood pumpin’!” Gram looked at the aforementioned acrobat with a twinkle in her eye, as he helped her into the sphere.

It meant taking a detour that passed by the house that had made her feel alive for the very first time. That house now made her feel as dead as the oak stump in the backyard. The one that once held the tire swing that they took turns swinging each other on during perfect, suburban summers.

That deep ache rose, huge like a legion, and, God, did she miss her best friend.
